Career Opportunities With an Engineering Degree

Engineers are the builders of our society. From the buildings and bridges that you drive on to the software you’re reading this page with, engineers are responsible for creating the things we use to make the world a better place. Because of this, there are plenty of opportunities for a person with an engineering degree to land a dream job at.

Types of Engineers

There are many different types of engineers that work in different fields. For example, a software engineer custom-designs programs for people to use, but can also create commercial software as well for end users. On the other hand, a chemical engineer works with compounds to create new products or modify existing ones. Other specialties include civil, environmental, electrical, mechanical, and nuclear.

Daily Tasks as an Engineer

The daily tasks you’ll do as an engineer depend on your specialty of course, but it all boils down to one main goal: solving a problem with a physical solution. For example, as a civil engineer, your problem might be how to build a bridge that spans a canyon. Engineers use math and science most when solving problems, though writings skills are also important, since you’ll be creating reports, and many engineers also have to have drafting skills. Most problems require many different types of engineers, so you also have to be good at teamwork to be successful in this field.

Research and Development

Because engineers are always building, they work well in firms that do research and development (R&D) for their products. In this slightly different role as an engineer, you would be responsible for taking data collected by scientists and developing prototypes from their observations. You basically lead up the development end of the scale, determining from the prototype how to go to mass production in the cheapest way possible or how to physically complete a project. In this sense, the problem is already 99% solved by other engineers – your job is to make it happen!

Many engineers opt for work at universities or educational institutions. There, not only do they teach about their related field, but they also do research as well (albeit not to the exclusivity that a traditional R&D job would require.) If you work in the universities, you may also be required to publish books and papers in order to obtain tenure.
