Program Rankings for Engineering Degrees
Going to a top engineering school can significantly increase your chances of landing a job after you graduate. At all colleges, engineering students take classes in design, math, physics, and related areas, but at top programs, you’ll not only have access to the best professors in the world, but you’ll also have the opportunity to complete internships with top engineering firms, access to alumni networks and students services, and more. Here are some of the top schools for engineers:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
MIT is the top school in a number of math and science fields, and for engineers, it is ranked #1 by U.S. News and World Report, as well as highly regarded by a number of other publications. Specifically, MIT is great for chemical, aerospace, electrical, materials, and mechanical engineers, as it is ranked first in all of these specialties. They also have top programs in nuclear and biomedical engineering. At MIT, students have access to 20 different research centers, and if you’re interested in coming to engineering from another field, you can enter their part-time Career Reengineering Program.
Like, MIT, Stanford is a top-ranked engineering school according to U.S. News and World Report. This is a slightly larger campus than you’ll find at MIT, and they rank #1 for computer and environmental engineering, as well as in the top five for industrial, materials, mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical, and aerospace engineering. They have 65 centers and labs for engineering students to do research at this school, and they’re committed to getting women in the classroom at Stanford, even though engineering is traditionally a male-dominated field. Stanford also offers a China Internship Program, where engineer students in certain specialties can study abraod for a semester in an intense internship experience.
University of California at Berkeley
Berkeley is a great engineering education option if you want to attend a top school but don’t have the money for a private school like MIT or Stanford. This college has top-ranked programs in the field of environmental engineering, computer engineering, and chemical engineering, and top five programs in a number of other specialties, yet tuition is less than a third of the cost of private school. They have 40 different research centers on campus to help you complete your education, as well as flexible degree options for graduate students.
